NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Lawyers for Harvey Weinstein on Monday appealed his conviction and asked a New York appeals court to grant him a new trial, according to reports.

In court filings, Weinsten's argued that the Manhattan Supreme Court judge who oversaw his trial "shouldn't have permitted testimony from four women whose sexual allegations hadn't resulted in criminal charges," the Wall Street Journal reported.

"Simply put, the prosecution tried Weinstein's character, not his conduct," his attorneys wrote in their appeal, according to the New York Times.

A judge sentenced the Hollywood producer to 23 years in prison last March after he was convicted on charges of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape.
