NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Police are questioning the husband of a woman who was found dead with apparent strangulation wounds in her luxury apartment on the Upper East Side on Wednesday night.
Officers responding to a 911 call just after 10 p.m. found the 67-year-old woman not breathing inside her apartment on E. 87th Street, between Lexington and Park avenues, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said wounds on her neck were consistent with strangulation and that she may have been dead for 24 hours.
The woman's 71-year-old husband, who police said made the 911 call, was taken into custody. He was questioned overnight at the 19th Precinct and charged with violating an order of protection.
Neighbors told 1010 WINS that police had been called to the home in the past for domestic violence complaints, leading the woman to take out the order of protection. They said the couple had been estranged for some time.
The woman has not been identified. The NYPD is awaiting a medical examiner's report on her cause of death.
