NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A wake was held Wednesday on Long Island in honor of FDNY firefighter William Moon who died after falling during a training exercise earlier this month.
The tragic accident happened on Dec. 12 when Moon fell 20 feet while prepping for a drill at his Brooklyn firehouse. He suffered a serious head injury and it was determined he would not survive.

Four days after the fall, Moon’s family announced his organs would be donated. He was 47.
The veteran firefighter was the 1,159th FDNY member to die in the line of duty, officials said. Moon is survived by his wife and two children.

On Wednesday, loved ones gathered at Chapey Funeral Home in East Islip for Moon’s wake scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. His funeral will be held Thursday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore at 11 a.m.
Earlier this year, Moon joined Rescue Company 2 after 20 years with Queens’ Ladder Company 133. He also served as a member of Islip’s volunteer fire department where he lived.
“Firefighter Moon will save the lives of 5 individuals including 3 in NY who were in need of a heart, liver, lungs & kidneys,” a tweet from LiveOnNY, an organ donation nonprofit read. “He was a hero in life and is now a hero in death who will live on through #organdonation. Our condolences to his family.”
