NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An 44-year-old East Flatbush man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on Wednesday for the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old rapper in 2017, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
James Oliver was infuriated when Darnell Pettway, who performed under the stage name Mook Mula, failed to back him up during an argument over a stolen cellphone, according to prosecutors.
Oliver shot Pettway on East 92nd Street near Rutland Road Dec. 2, 2017 at an apartment building after a night drinking and gambling.
Emergency responders rushed the victim to Kings County Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Oliver fled to Pennsylvania. He wasn’t arrested until New Year’s Day, 2019, when he was busted for an unrelated incident.
He pleaded guilty to murder charges on April 26.
“This was a tragic and senseless shooting of a man who had his life and budding musical career tragically cut short,” said Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez. “Brooklyn is safer with this defendant behind bars, and today’s sentence sends a strong message that gun violence in our neighborhoods will be met with serious consequences.”
