NYC crime continues to surge compared to previous year

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Crime in New York City saw a nearly 60% increase in the past week alone compared to this time last year, according to statistics released by the NYPD on Monday.

Car thefts had the highest jump in cases for the week ending Sunday with 255 reported incidents, up from 118 thefts in 2021, a more than 116% increase, the figures show.

Grand larceny also had a surge, up more than 93%, with a reported 908 cases compared to 570 this week last year.

The amount of rapes in the city increased by 67% in a year from 21 cases to 35.

Transit crimes also saw an increase in incidents, up 89% from this time last year. This week, the transit system saw 34 crimes compared to 18 during this time in 2021.

Overall, crime has gone up over 42% in the city since the beginning of the year, according to the statistics.
