NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday that New Yorkers will be able to request telehealth abortion services through Virtual ExpressCare provided by NYC Health + Hospitals’ visits by video or by call beginning this week, becoming the first state to do so.

“Tough decision is made from the comfort of your environment and from your home,” Adams said.

For those who are clinically eligible, providers will also be able to prescribe abortion medication that will be delivered to the patient's New York City address within days.

This service comes in response to the June 2022 overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States, which prompted the city to enact six bills safeguarding reproductive freedoms and rights within its jurisdiction.

Since then, Adams has launched the Abortion Access Hub to confidentially refer callers to abortion care, rolled out no-cost medication abortion at the city’s sexual health clinics, and signed legislation strengthening abortion protections for New Yorkers.

"In New York City, we will never stop fighting for a woman’s right to choose the care that is right for them, and we will never stop working to make abortion care more accessible to all New Yorkers,” Adams said. “This is an important step forward of using technology to deal with a major demand of those who are looking for access in New York.”

This service will be available seven days a week, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Patients can access telehealth abortion care online or by calling (718) 360-8981.
