NYPD officer hospitalized, suspect in custody after hit-run crash on Staten Island freeway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – An NYPD officer was injured Thursday by a hit-and-run driver who smashed into his patrol car and fled the scene on a Staten Island expressway—before later surrendering to cops.

The officer was stationed on the southbound West Shore Expressway—near Exit 8, between Edward Curry and South avenues in Bloomfield—around 8:40 a.m. when his marked patrol car was struck from behind.

The driver of the vehicle that struck him kept going and fled the scene, police said.

The officer was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

The search for the suspect ended when he turned himself in to police, according to the NYPD.

It wasn't immediately clear if he was injured or what charges he may face.
