NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A homicide suspect shot and wounded an NYPD officer, who then fatally shot him at an apartment in Brooklyn on Monday morning.

The four-year veteran of the NYPD was rushed in the back of a patrol car to Brookdale University Hospital after being struck on the left side of the face with birdshot pellets, according to police. He was in stable condition and in "good spirits."

The confrontation began around 7:45 a.m., as police conducted a homicide investigation on Thomas S. Boyland Street in Brownsville.

Police believe the yet-identified suspect shot his neighbor during a dispute. The victim, 41-year-old Leroy Wallace, was found dead on the sidewalk.

As police closed in on the suspect, he fired at them with a shotgun, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference from the hospital.

“Our cop returns fire, and the perp barricades himself back inside of the apartment,” Tisch said.

Police later sent a drone into the apartment, where they saw the suspect lying motionless on the floor. Investigators believe he died after being shot by the officer.

Mayor Eric Adams, who is visiting Israel, said he had been briefed on the shooting and was "praying for the officer’s recovery."
