NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police fatally shot a 19-year-old man while responding to a 911 call of "emotionally disturbed" person at a Queens residence on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Police responded to a call for a person in mental distress at a home located at 101-12 103rd Street in Ozone Park at around 1:40 p.m., according to officials.

"A young man who was in mental crisis, who called 911 had a quick response by police officers that quickly escalated into a chaotic situation where our officers had to defend themselves," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said during a live press conference.

Responding officers went to the second floor apartment where the situation became "quite hectic, chaotic and dangerous right away," Chell added.

Officers attempted to get the man help when he pulled scissors out of a drawer and came towards the officers, the chief said.

Both officers deployed their tasers which were effective until the man's mother went to help the man and "accidently knocked the tasers out of his body", Chell said.

The man then came at the officers again, prompting them to discharge their firearms.

The unidentified man was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he died due to his injury.

Two officers were taken to the hospital for treatment of tinnitus.

An investigation is ongoing.
