NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Pentagon officer killed earlier this month in a stabbing attack at a bus platform outside the defense building was laid to rest in his native Brooklyn Monday.

George Gonzalez, an Iraq War and police veteran, was killed during the Aug. 3 stabbing attack outside the Pentagon Transit Center. Officials have not detailed a motive behind 27-year-old Austin William Lanz's "ambush-style attack." Lanz was later killed by returning gunfire.

WJLA reports Gonzalez's body arrived in New York City on Friday with an officer escort.

About 200 people — including his family, friends and loved ones — gathered at St. Barbara's Roman Catholic Church in Bushwick, Brooklyn to honor Gonzalez, according to The New York Daily News.

Gonzalez, a graduate of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, was a "die-hard" Yankees fan. The Pentagon Force Protection Agency said he was "well-liked," "gregarious" and "respected by his fellow officers."
