NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The NYPD on Thursday identified the superintendent who was found dead inside garbage bags at a Queens apartment that he had reportedly entered to collect rent.

Jose Portillo, 55, of Queens, was the man found dead inside two trash bags that were under a bed inside the residence at 137-17 70th Ave. in Kew Gardens Hills on Tuesday evening, police said.

Portillo had entered the apartment to collect rent at the request of his employer, who then called police for a welfare check when he never heard back from him, WABC reported.

Surveillance video reportedly shows Portillo entering the apartment and never coming out.

Police said Thursday that a person of interest was in custody in the case, though it's unclear who that person is.

Detectives had taken a man and woman who live at the residence to the local police precinct for questioning, neighbors said.

A young mother who lives next door said the victim was "a big, nice guy."

"To think somebody did that and he's in a bag in pieces is just freaky," she said. "I don't know who managed to do that. This whole thing is crazy to me."
