Police seek suspect who assaulted cops with chemical spray when confronted for shoplifting

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police are pursuing a man who sprayed officers in the face with an unknown chemical after shoplifting in Brooklyn last month, the NYPD said.

At 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 23 the suspect entered a Target located at 139 Flatbush Avenue, near Atlantic Avenue, police said.

Officials said that the man tried leave the store with merchandise he did not pay for and was approached by two uniformed police officers.

There was a scuffle over the shop items and the man discharged an unknown chemical spray in the officers’ faces that caused burning and swelling of the eyes, the NYPD said.

EMS transported the cops to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital to treat their injuries.
