NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Police shot and killed a man who they believe was armed with a gun as they responded to a domestic dispute at an apartment in the Rockaways on Monday, police said.
The NYPD got a 911 call about shots fired shortly after 10:30 a.m., and officers responded to a fourth-floor apartment at the Ocean Bay apartments at 409 Beach 54th St. in Edgemere, where two brothers were said to be in a dispute.
At the apartment, the officers knocked on a bedroom door and made contact with a man inside, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said at a press briefing. The cops spoke with him through the door, and at some point he opened the door.
"The door opens up, our members go to step into the door, and then the male points a firearm at them," Maddrey said. "Our officers gave commands to drop the weapon and then our officer discharged his firearm."
The officers rendered aid to the man, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at a hospital shortly before noon, having suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to officials. He has not been identified.
Maddrey said multiple shots were fired by police, but the exact number is still under investigation.
The two officers were not injured but were taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.
The gun that the man had appears to be an imitation firearm, Maddrey said. Police don't believe any shots were actually fired as the 911 call had indicated, the chief said.
There are no indications at this point that the man had any prior interactions with the NYPD.
The shooting remains under investigation.
