NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police were called to a Queens middle school on Wednesday afternoon after an unknown substance was sprayed in the school stairwell, authorities said.

Officials said the incident happened at I.S. 126Q Albert Shanker School For Visual & Performing Arts in Astoria just before 2 p.m.

The substance caused a reaction in 23 students and one teacher, with coughing and throat irritation, police said.

Five of the affected people went to the hospital.

It is currently unclear what substance was sprayed in the stairwell.
