Dr. Bassett was scheduled to join the governor and other state officials Monday afternoon for a briefing on the state’s COVID-19 progress but missed the press event due to the positive diagnosis.

“She has tested positive through a COVID rapid test,” Hochul said.

It remains unclear when Dr. Bassett may have become infected with the virus, but the governor did note that her team is tested every day.

“We’re following strict protocol,” Hochul said. “[Dr. Bassett] will be having another PCR test just to confirm that, so in the meantime, we’re going to take all the necessary precautions.”

Hochul said Dr. Bassett left the office immediately after receiving the positive diagnosis.

The governor added that the health commissioner is vaccinated and has already received her booster shot, making her positive diagnosis a breakthrough case.

However, Hochul did say that Dr. Bassett is not feeling ill at the moment.

“She’s feeling fine, but we’re thinking about her and her family and all the New Yorkers who are just having their family plans disrupted because of this virus,” Hochul said.

The governor concluded by reminding all New Yorkers to continue to wear a mask in public and stressed that vaccinations are crucial to preventing serious illness.

She added that anyone who is eligible should also get a booster shot.
