NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The promoters of a concert featuring The Chainsmokers that was held in the Hamptons in July will be fined $20,000 for violating COVID-19 executive orders, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.
New York state will slap "In the Know Experiences" and "Invisible Noise," which promoted the July 25 concert in Southampton, with a $20,000 fine, the governor said in a teleconference Wednesday morning.
The state will also bar the Town of Southampton from signing off on permits for group gatherings without its approval.
"Frankly, I don't know what they were thinking," Cuomo said of the town's decision to hold the concert. "So if they want to approve an outside group activity, they're going to have to get it pre-approved by the state."
Organizers billed the charity concert as a "drive-in music experience," but videos posted to social media showed hundreds of attendees flouting social distancing rules by crowding together in front of the stage to listen to The Chainsmokers, an electronic music duo.
Two days after the concert took place, Cuomo said he was "appalled" by the videos.
"We have no tolerance for the illegal reckless endangerment of public health," he wrote on Twitter.
In the Know Experiences didn't immediately respond to request for comment on the penalty, and Invisible Noise couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
