NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was charged with driving while ability impaired/drugs after a multi-vehicle crash over the weekend left one woman dead and injured several others, officials said.
The collision happened at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Saturday in the vicinity of Second Avenue and Hilltop Drive in Brentwood, authorities said.
According to police, 27-year-old Christian Lopez was driving a 2014 Acura TL east on Second Avenue when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2004 Toyota Camry also traveling in the same direction.
The impact of the crash pushed the Toyota into the westbound lanes, where a Jeep Wrangler struck the vehicle in the passenger side, officials said.
Soraida Polanco, 57, was in the front passenger seat of the Toyota and was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her husband, 59-year-old Rodolfo Polanco was driving the Toyota and was also taken to the hospital for serious injuries along with 35-year-old Blanca Flor Moran Acosta, the backseat passenger who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the Jeep, 39-year-old Meyvellin Munoz, her two sons, ages 10 and 14, and 69-year-old Claro Munoz, a backseat passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Blanca Garcia, a 71-year-old passenger who was also in the backseat of the Jeep was hospitalized after suffering serious injuries.
Lopez was hospitalized for minor injuries and charged, officials said.
