ISLIP, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A Long Island man captured video of a mysterious object gliding in the sky over Suffolk County this week, setting off speculation about what the phenomenon could be.

The cameraman, who wanted to be referred to only as J.B., captured the object on his phone around 5 p.m. Sunday as he and his adult son were driving on the South Service Road of Sunrise Highway in the Islip area.

There wasn't a cloud in the sky when the white object shimmied past. J.B. and his son got out of the car and started filming it, as did other drivers.

"It was just something that was so unusual that you had to stop and look," he said.

J.B. ended up following the object in his car. He saw a piece of it fall off before he lost it altogether.

"My first reaction was a spy balloon, because it looked like a sophisticated thing," he said. "It wasn't somebody's drone that somebody just made in their backyard. This thing had like transparency, like some kind of vapor around it that fell off, a little piece of it, like floating."

The Suffolk Police Department said it didn't receive any calls about the object.

It remains unclear exactly what it was, but people had their own theories when asked Tuesday.

"It looks like some kind of satellite taking pictures, because it's kind of low," one man said. "So I would assume it's doing some kind of recording."

Others thought it might be an alien spacecraft or simply a large garbage bag floating in the wind.
