Angels interim manager Phil Nevin announced Thursday night that Noah Syndergaard will not face the Mets on Sunday Night Baseball as scheduled, the team deciding to give Thor extra rest and move his next start back to Tuesday.

Perhaps a function of rest, or avoiding the Mets…or, perhaps, given that Shohei Ohtani pitched Thursday, the Halos can line up Thor and Ohtani to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday in a two-game Freeway Series against the Dodgers.

For now, when it comes to the Mets series, the Angels have a TBD on Friday night against Tylor Megill, who will make his return after missing a month with right biceps inflammation.

Michael Lorenzen and Patrick Sandoval, who were scheduled to pitch Friday and Saturday, were each pushed back a day, meaning Lorenzen will face Carlos Carrasco Saturday and Sandoval will now be Taijuan Walker’s opponent Sunday night.

The Angels have an off-day Monday before their two-game set at Chavez Ravine, so pushing Syndergaard back to that opener will give him a full week’s rest, as he last pitched on Monday against Boston.

Syndergaard has a 3.69 ERA in 46 1/3 innings over nine starts this year, a fine bounce back so far after missing all of 2020 and pitching just 10 total innings in 2021 thanks to Tommy John surgery.
