Prisma Health has announced a $3 million endowed chair campaign in honor of an outgoing breakthrough cancer physician and researcher.

Since its humble beginnings, Prisma Health’s Cancer Institute has grown significantly over the last 35 years to now researching and developing breakthrough cancer treatment methods.

Dr. W. Larry Gluck, the director of the Cancer Institute, has been at the forefront of many of these breakthroughs and trials.

“We will sometimes work with a biotechnology firm where we help to design the trial and then move that into clinical trial and onwards,” Dr. Gluck said. “The second level of research is where we have done it entirely here in our research lab.”

Now, as Dr. Gluck prepares to retire, Prisma Health has announced a new position named in honor of him that will help keep the institute’s wheel turning as a researcher, physician, and administrator.

They will serve a similar role to Dr. Gluck’s current position, serving as both a physician to cancer patients that come through the institute as well as a researcher working in the labs on the different trials and studies.

Mark Smith is the husband of a woman who went through clinical trials at the Cancer Institute for several years, and he credits Dr. Gluck and his team’s work to extending the six months she was expected to have left up to seven years.
