The Palmetto State's 27 percent black population represents a significant part of the Democrats' most consistent support base. Iowa and New Hampshire are each more than 90 percent white. South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn says those are the numbers that count.

However, New Hampshire Democrats have joined the state's GOP leaders pledging to forge ahead with the first presidential primary next year regardless of the DNC calendar.

In fact, state party bosses warn another Democrat could run in the unsanctioned primary and if Biden skips it in obedience to party rules, might win, embarrassing the president by making a competition out of what was supposed to be a coronation.

No one has emerged from his own party so far to challenge to challenge Biden's reelection, and South Carolina hasn't backed a Democrat for president since 1976.
