ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals have declined to tender contracts to pitcher John Brebbia and first baseman Rangel Ravelo. They will become free agents.

The Cardinals made the announcement on Wednesday night.

Brebbia had Tommy John surgery in June and is not expected to return to the mound in game action until mid summer. He was one of the Cardinals most consistent pitchers between 2017-2019, making 161 appearances with an ERA of 3.14.

Ravelo made his MLB debut with St. Louis in 2019 and has hit .189 with three home runs in 42 games.

All MLB teams had until 7 p.m. CT Wednesday to decide if they would offer contracts to or non-tender certain players who are arbitration eligible. Choosing not to offer a contract meant the player would immediately become a free agent.

Some of the other players that the Cardinals had to make decisions on were pitchers John Gant, Jack Flaherty, Alex Reyes and Jordan Hicks, and outfielder Harrison Bader.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak previously told KMOX they were deliberating about just one player, but did not identify him.

One of the biggest decisions on the non-tender deadline came from Chicago where the Cubs decided to not offer a contract to outfielder Kyle Schwarber.
