ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A former Cardinals coach some will remember is set to join the managerial staff of a another former Cardinals coach.
According to Sportsgrid Host and Senior Baseball Contributor to the Miami Herald Craig Mish, former Cardinals assistant coach and St. Louis-native Bill Mueller is set to join former Cardinals bench coach and Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker's staff as a assistant hitting coach.
Along the move, the Marlins have also promoted former Cardinals hitting coach John Mabry as the Marlins lead hitting coach now.
Mueller is a name a lot of Cardinals Nation will remember. The Maryland Heights-native and DeSmet graduate joined then-Cardinals manager Mike Matheny's staff in 2015 as a assistant hitting coach. Before joining the staff, the 11-year MLB veteran and 2004 World Series Champion with the Boston Red Sox was a longtime front office exec with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
During that time with the Dodgers, Mueller would get his first taste coaching in 2007, serving as an interim-hitting coach for the Dodgers after the team fired Hall of Famer Eddie Murray.
Mueller would move to full-time coaching in 2014, becoming a hitting coach of then-Cubs manager Rick Renteria. Mueller would resign from the role after his assistant Mike Brumley was dismissed.
In Mueller's time with the Cardinals, he would be on the Cardinals coaching staff for four seasons, including a short stint serving as the club's first base coach in 2016 after longtime Cardinals coach Jose Oquendo was placed on medical leave, moving then- first-base coach Chris Maloney to third base. Mueller was fired alongside Matheny and Mabry in 2018 right before All-Star Break as the team went a paltry 48-47 and the team hitting was below league average.
Mueller joining Schumaker's staff will be the first time he is back in a MLB dugout. After his time with the Cardinals ended, Mueller would not be involved with any Major League club until he joined the Washington Nationals in 2022 as a member of the National's player development staff.
