One of the biggest questions facing the Falcons this offseason has been the nonstop discussion about whether to win now or build for the future.
The Falcons are drafting fourth overall in the NFL draft because of how bad a season they just had, finishing at 4-12 and firing their coach and GM midseason
With a new regime featuring head coach Arthur Smith and general manager Terry Fontenot now in place, it's certainly a decision that will shape how they progress into the 2021 season with a clean slate.
So what should shape the decision to win now or to build for the future?
In the end it has to come down simply to how far away do you think the team is? Essentially, are you closer to being the Bucs or are you closer to being the Jets?
When John Fricke and Hugh Douglas were asked that question they had a few points about which end of the NFL they felt the Falcons were closer to.
"You get a good sustainable running game and it takes a tremendous amount of pressure off of any quarterback," says Hugh Douglas. "Look at the margin of losses, a lot of these games, you need to learn how to finish. There's some talent on this team, you just need to focus and play better and that comes what good coaches do, put players in position to be successful."
"I want to believe they are closer to the Bucs and Packers. If things fall their way in four games last year they would have been in the playoffs," proclaims Fricke. "They were a better team than being dead last in the NFC, and maybe it's as simple as a coaching change."
