"What's the pitch for a young man either in Atlanta or on the West Coast about playing basketball at Georgia Tech?" That was the question posed by Steak Shapiro on this morning's Steakhouse to new Georgia Tech Men's Basketball Coach Damon Stoudamire.
"Come to midtown and play in front of your people. What better way? We've got 14, 15 Fortune 500 companies here. We got three out of five Tech graduates that are millionaires. You don't have to go anywhere. It's all right here."
Safe to say Coach Stoudamire understands just how important it is to keep in-state talent in-state, just how exciting this Tech team can be.
The new head coach made a splash at his introductory press conference a week and a half ago, when he became emotional describing what getting this job means to him. Now, comes the next part; building this team back into a national power. "As I know it, it was the city's team. While I was coming up, they were more popular than the Hawks."
With only 11 conference wins over the last two season, and one NCCA tournament birth since 2010, Coach Stoudamire knows he's got an uphill battle at the start, but that's going to deter him at all. As Coach told Steak and Sandra this morning "There's not time to be tired."
