It’s not great news, but it’s not horrible news.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said on Friday that center Evgeni Malkin is week-to-week with a lower body injury.
"Obviously when you lose Geno, it's a tough loss from our standpoint for everything that he brings to our team. But we are certainly encouraged that hopefully we will get him back in a timely fashion,” said Sullivan.
Malkin took a big, clean open-ice hit from Boston Bruins defenseman Jared in the first period. He went to the locker room.
He tried to return but ultimately missed the rest of the game.
With a shortened NHL season week-to-week could mean the rest of the regular season but Sullivan says there is a “strong possibility” Malkin returns before the end of the season.
Third-line center Teddy Blueger is out longer-term with an upper body injury.
In other injury news, forward Jared McCann practiced in full again with the Penguins and will be a game time decision on Saturday night in New Jersey.
