Chris Mack's Eye Opener: Pickett 'Bracing' for Ravens, Jurkovec Benched, Preseason Power Play
Brace-ing for Baltimore
Kenny Pickett practiced in a limited capacity yesterday, splitting first team reps with Mitch Trubisky while wearing a brace on his left knee, which sustained a bone bruise in Sunday's loss to the Texans.
Pickett insists if all goes well, he'll be ready for the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
I'll repeat my plea from yesterday: Please don't let a less-than-100%, less-than-fully mobile Pickett play on Sunday.
Above and beyond the physical nature of Steelers/Ravens games, I think it's fair to ask if Pickett is mentally ready to attack the 3rd-best defense in the NFL in yards allowed (260.8 per game), passing yards allowed (168.3 per game), and points per game (14.5 per game). Going out against that defense, with the possibility of getting Marlon Humphrey back, isn't going to help Pickett's indecisive reads and tendency to panic in the pocket.
Just Not Phil-ing It
At least two weeks too late, the Pitt Panthers are reportedly moving on from Phil Jurkovec as their starting QB.
In retrospect, it's clear to see that Jurkovec was simply a product of Zay Flowers.
It's also of my opinion that some people wanted to try and will him to prominence simply because of where he went to high school.
Either way, and thankfully for Pitt football fans, Jurkovec is finally done.
Now, to see what the Panthers can salvage of their season with four Top 25 opponents left on their schedule, and three of them coming in the next four weeks, starting with Louisville next Saturday at Heinz Field.
Powerless Play in Preseason
After watching what we saw from the Steelers in the preseason and taking a giant leap in believing that it may indicate what they'd be capable of in the regular season, maybe it'd be smart to not ascribe too many expectations -positively or negatively- to what we've seen from the Penguins' preseason.
For example, an 0-for-5 night on the power play against Detroit last night doesn't really mean squat when you consider the man advantage unit was made up of names like Zohorna, Johnsson, Puustinen, Smith, & Nylander rather than Crosby, Malkin, Rakell, Letang, & Karlsson.
But when you consider the two previous games both utilized the full number one power play unit and it went a combined 0-for-6, I'd contend it's still something very much worth keeping an eye on as they prepare for tomorrow night's preseason finale in Buffalo and the regular season opener against Chicago next Tuesday.
