Semifinalist for the Maxwell Award given out next month

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Kenny Pickett's name continues on prestigious award lists.

After setting a Pitt record, throwing for 519 yards against Miami.  Pickett named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award as the nation's 'top college football player'.


The senior from New Jersey broke the Pitt all-time all-purpose yards and touchdowns responsible for record Saturday and is yards from becoming the school's all-time leading passer in a single season and for a career.  Pickett is 207 of 299 (69.2%) for 2,755 yards, 26 touchdowns and three interceptions in 2021.

Other quarterbacks making the cut-Alabama's Bryce Young, Matt Corral from Ole Miss, Ohio State freshman CJ Stroud, Wake Forest's Sam Hartman, Desmond Ridder from Cincinnati, SMU's Tanner Mordecai, Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina, Virginia's Brennan Armstrong and Liberty's Malik Willis.

Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker, coming off a huge game scoring five touchdowns against Michigan, is a semifinalist along with Texas' RB Bijan Robinson.

A pair of Hall of Fame Panthers won the award previously, Tony Dorsett (1975) and defensive end Hugh Green (1980).

Three finalists will be announced on November 23 and the winner on December 9.
