Whether safety or LB, Louis says he’s ready for NFL

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The phrase ‘jack of all trades and master of none’ is one used to describe people that usually never make it to the upper echelon in their profession. Being versatile in today’s NFL is something Kyle Louis believes gives him an advantage.

“People try saying that like ‘he’s a master of nothing’, but really a jack of all trades is better than someone who is the master of only one,” Louis said Thursday turning the phrase.

What he means by that is NFL teams have talked to him about playing linebacker, playing safety, mostly in the box, or potentially a nickel position. Veteran NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper has Louis listed as the fourth best safety prospect in the NFL Draft.

“We watched him move like a safety,” said Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi. “We watched him pick off balls and play that nickel position and really play that hash in the middle of the field. He’s done a little bit of everything.”

Narduzzi said he’s big for a safety at 224 pounds, but it would just be a matter of learning the position full-time. In the Pitt offense he had a lot of freedom playing the Star’ linebacker spot, which allowed him the flexibility to make plays or the defensive coordinator to move him around. A defensive coordinator by trade before becoming a head coach, Narduzzi said Louis earned the trust he got to be so flexible.

“He’s so smart,” Narduzzi said. “I’ve never seen a linebacker work so hard in a film room like he does. Six AM, he’s in there watching videotape. It’s something that is branded in my brain. It’s not one day and then two weeks later you see him again, it’s every day. It’s constant.”

“That’s what makes a great player. It’s not only what you see out here, it’s the work he puts in the film room. Kyle is the master of that.”

“He loves the game of football.”

“It gave me the great position to be whatever they defensive coordinator wants me to be at the next level,” Louis said. “I’m in the beauty of the eye of the beholder, so I could be a linebacker. A lot of people see him as a safety, but at the end of the day, I’m going to me.”

“I’m going be a football player and most importantly I’m going to be a shark. I’m going to carry that confidence to the next level.”
