PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to show their faith in the men behind the benches, this time with a contract extension to head coach Mike Sullivan.
Already under contract for the 2022-23 season, Sullivan's new deal will keep him as the Penguins bench boss until the 2026-27 season.
"Mike is one of the top coaches in the National Hockey League and it was important for us to have him signed long term," said general manager Ron Hextall. "He is a great leader that finds success through communication, honesty and accountability. We know that Sully is committed to continuing a winning culture here in Pittsburgh."
The Sullivan extension continues the trend of handing out new deals to member of the Penguins coaching staff.
Not too long ago the Penguins handed out contract extensions to both Mike Vellucci and Todd Reirden, with the latter receiving a promotion of associate coach.
Since joining the Penguins, Sullivan has been one of the best coaches in the NHL with a record of 297-156-54 and two Stanley Cups.
297 wins with the Penguins is a franchise record, dethroning Dan Bylsma.
"We value the relationship we are developing with Mike and felt it was important to ensure that relationship would continue long term," said Fenway Sports Group Chairman Tom Werner. "He's one of the best coaches in the National Hockey League and we look forward to our continued collaboration with him and the entire Penguins organization to bring another Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh."
