The Penguins have traded Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor to the Vancouver Canucks for three players and a Conditional 2025 first round pick.

Vancouver traded J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers Friday night and received a Conditional 2025 first round pick in that deal. The Canucks flipped that pick for Petterson and O'Connor. Pittsburgh also receives 6'0 forward Melvin Fernström, 6'7 defenseman Vincent Desharnais and 6'2 forward Danton Heinen.

Heinen returns for his second stint with Pittsburgh. He was a Penguin from 2021-2023.

According to NHL.com,
"The acquisition of the conditional 2025 first-round pick gives the Penguins 29 selections over the next three NHL drafts, which includes four first-round selections and 15 picks in the first three rounds. No team has more draft picks, or selections in the first three rounds, over the next three NHL Drafts than Pittsburgh."

Pettersson and O'Connor both become free agents after this season, Kyle Dubas was able to get Heinen and Desharnais for the rest of this year and next year. Fernstrom is 18 years old and playing overseas for Orebro HK of the SHL.

This season, Heinen has scored 6 goals, recorded 11 assists and 17 points in 50 games for the Canucks. Desharnais is in his third NHL season. He has three assists in 34 games.
