Oneil Cruz costs Bucs game with 'what was he thinking' errors
The good news for the Pirates is they won another series. The bad news is it should've been a sweep of the Astros on Wednesday.
Other than a poor pitching performance, it's hard to point to one player as being responsible for a loss.
But, on Wednesday, short stop Oneil Cruz was the reason the Pirates left Houston with a loss.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning Cruz, for some reason, Cruz bolted into left field, with two outs, and broke up an easy catch for Bryan Reynolds.
Cruz missed the catch, picked up the ball and committed another error, throwing the ball to the backstop, allowing Houston to score a run, making it 4-2.
They would give up another run that inning and a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the Astros a 5-4 lead and eventual win.
Cruz had a total of three errors with another throwing error.
Cruz now has 20 errors with eight defensive runs saved at short stop.
While it's one of the more disappointing plays you will see on a baseball field, Cruz can also change a game with one swing of his bat.
At 25-years-old, Cruz has all the talent in the world but needs to try to relax and not think too much.
You take the good with the bad with Cruz, but with the Pirates in a tight playoff picture, a loss like Wednesday's could be the difference between a time competing for a playoff spot and one that gets in.
