Mackey: Pirates DFA 1B/DH Yoshi Tsutsugo

According to a report, Pirates first baseman and designated hitter Yoshi Tsutsugo has been designated for assignment.

Jason Mackey, of the Post-Gazette reports that Tucupita Marcano will be taking his spot on the roster.


Tsutsugo was batting .171 with 19 RBI and two home runs.

He had an on base percentage of .249 and an OPS of .478.

Tsutsugo signed with the Pirates last August after he was waived by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He signed a one-year deal with the Pirates in the offseason worth $4 million.

Tsutsugo began that season as the starter at first but was replaced by Michael Chavis.

The Hashimoto, Japan native went on the injured list in late May with a back injury and returned in early July.

Over his three-year career in the MLB, Tsutsugo has a batting average of .197 with 18 home runs, 75 RBI an OBP of .291 and was slugging .339.

Marcano was sent to Triple-A back in early July and since has hit .362 for the Indianapolis Indians. He can play the outfield or second base.

The Pirates look for two wins in a row on Wednesday night at PNC Park against the Milwaukee Brewers.
