PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates called up right-hander Cody Ponce to start against the Cubs Tuesday night.
Ponce made 3 starts for Indianapolis going 11.2 innings, allowing 14 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks and 11 strikeouts with a 5.40 ERA. The 6'6", 255-pound righty pitched in 5 games for the Pirates in 2020 going 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings. He allowed 12 hits, 5 were home runs.
The California native was a second round pick of the Brewers in 2015 out of Cal Poly Pomona. He was the return in the Jordan Lyles trade in July, 2019.
Pirates are opening a two-team home stand against the Cubs Tuesday night at 6:35p on 93.7 The Fan.

Right-hander Roansy Contreras makes his fourth start of the season tonight in Altoona against Erie. He's the reigning Double-A Northeast League Pitcher of the Week and hasn't given up a run this season.
Acquired in the Jameson Taillon trade, the 21-year-old has thrown 17.2 scoreless innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 walks, struck out 28 with a WHIP of 0.57. In his last full season in 2019, Contreras was 12-5 with a 3.33 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 132.1 innings in A ball.
First rounder starting
2019 first round pick, right-hander Quinn Priester starts for High-A Greensboro Tuesday. Priester won his first pro start last time out going 5 scoreless innings giving up 3 hits, a walk and struck out 4.
