The Pirates claimed catcher Tyler Heineman off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.

To make room for Heineman on the 40-man roster, catcher Andrew Knapp has been designated for assignment.

The Pirates are already thin at catcher with Roberto Perez currently on the injured list with a "very severe" left hamstring strain that could leave him out of action for months.

The Pirates current starting catcher is Michael Perez who is batting .167 with two home runs and three hits in 18 at bats. Knapp was batting .129 with four hits and two RBI over 31 at bats.

In 15 at bats in 2022, Heineman is batting .267 with four hits and one RBI.

The Pirates open up a road trip in Chicago Monday night against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
