Mike Tomlin just turned 50 and is still going strong as the Steelers head coach, but how much time does he have left?
Talking during the NFL's annual meetings in Florida, Tomlin said he has no idea how much longer he'll be a head coach.
"My wife might have a better idea than I do, I have no idea," said Tomlin.
Tomlin signed a three-year extension last April that will keep him in Pittsburgh through at least 2024.
While the Steelers have only three playoff victories going back to 2011 and four straight playoff losses, Tomlin has been able to maintain a non-losing record for his entire career in Pittsburgh going back to 2007.
Ron Cook and Joe Starkey agreed during the Cook & Joe Show that they see Tomlin in Pittsburgh at least another five years, with Cook adding he can see the Super Bowl-winning coach coaching through 65.
"Maybe not here, who knows how that will end up, he's a lifer, I've talked to people that work with that say he's a junkie, a football junkie," said Cook. "I think he's going to coach another 10-15 years and maybe even more . . . I don't see him giving it up, I think he just loves it too much."
But could money persuade Tomlin to leave football coaching?
Caller Anthony in Oakland brought up an interesting proposal.
There have been reports that Amazon has offered Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay up to $100 million over five years to be a part of their Thursday Night Football broadcasts.
Anthony thinks that if the price was right, Tomlin could leave for television.
"It's no secret the networks love Mike Tomlin, his news conferences are must-see TV, you know with (Brian) Flores here I think there may be an easy transition after they build up the team," said Anthony.
Tomlin could essentially name his price as well with NBC Sports executive Fred Gaudelli telling The Athletic last year that he is the most wanted person in football.
"I mean, he's got a language all of his own that everybody can understand. He's got a really expressive personality. You'd want him in the studio so you could see him more, but I think he'd be equally good on a game. If you said to me you can take one guy out of the league right now; it's not even a hard call. It's Mike Tomlin," said Gaudelli.
Tomlin reportedly makes $11.5 million a year with the Steelers, among the highest paid coaches in the country, but $20 million or more a year to commentate on football may be enough to persuade him to television.
But again, it's hard to argue that anyone in the NFL is more passionate about coaching than Mike Tomlin.
