Steelers cut nine players, including two locals

Former Pitt, PSU DBs among those released in first round of cuts

The dreams of a pair of local players to make the Steelers 53-man roster were squashed Saturday.

Former Clairton and Penn State safety Lamont Wade, and former Woodland Hills and Pitt cornerback Lafayette Pitts, each were part of the first round of roster cuts made by the Steelers in advance of Tuesday evening's final deadline.

The move gets the roster number down to 71 players currently.

Also included in the cuts is wide receiver Mathew Sexton, who appeared to be a candidate to make the 53-man roster before hauling in just two passes and muffing two punts in Friday's 34-9 loss to Carolina.

The other players released were tight end Marcus Baugh, running back Tony Brooks-James, cornerback Shakur Brown, defensive tackle T.J. Carter, wide receiver Anthony Johnson and guard Malcom Pridgeon.

The Steelers will need to cut 18 more players by 4 p.m. Friday. They open the regular season on September 12 in Buffalo.
