Steelers OC Smith expects competition to 'heat up' during Training Camp
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin made it clear in the offseason, Russell Wilson is in "pole position" to be the Steelers next starting quarterback.
But, speaking on Tuesday at Steelers mini camp underway, new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said to expect more of a competition between Wilson and Justin Fields.
Asked by 93.7 The Fan Sports Director if they're just ramping Wilson up for the season of if it's a genuine competition.
"It's a competition and obviously we get to Latrobe, certainly I'm sure things will heat up . . . both those guys know that however they were acquired, when they got here and I think it's been pretty transparent," said Smith.
Signed to the Steelers after being cut by the Denver Broncos, Wilson is the proven veteran in the QB room with a Super Bowl victory on his resume'.
Fields was traded to the Steelers from Chicago, where he played three seasons.
Many insiders believe it's Wilson's job in 2024 and the Steelers will try to get a feel for what they have in Fields as the seasons progresses and could be the quarterback of the future.
If Wilson is productive and helps get the Steelers a playoff win or two, the organization will have a good problem on their hands.
Wilson and Fields are 10 years apart in age. Wilson is 35, Fields is 25.
