Mayor Bass praises L.A. residents for ‘staying home, staying safe’

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass opened her Monday morning press conference with a hearty thank you to Angelenos for “paying attention to calls for concern of staying home, staying safe, and staying informed.”

Mayor Bass, who urged residents to stay home Sunday during Tropical Storm Hilary, also noted that as the city recovers, “sometimes damage can occur in the hours and days after a storm hits so Angelenos should continue to stay vigilant.''

She added the Department of Water and Power have are working to “return power” and that 311 hours were extended.

“We will approach recovery with the same intensity as we approached our preparation,” she said.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said that over the course of 24 hours, the department responded to 1,833 emergency incidents and that dispatch received 4,105 calls.

“This represents over 1,000 additional emergency phone calls than our normal average,” she said.

Chief Crowley noted there were no reports of major injuries or storm-related damage. She did say five cars were stuck in a flooded intersection in Sun Valley Monday night. One person was rescued and no injuries were reported.

“This serves as a very good reminder for all of us to avoid driving through flooded streets and especially if you cannot see what is under the particular surface,” she said.

She added that the Los Angeles Police Department responded to 97 traffic accidents on Sunday, but no fatalities were reported.
