The Padres opened their 3-game series against the Cardinals with a 6-2 loss on Monday night. Matt Waldron struggled in his first start of the season, allowing 4 earned runs on 9 hits and a walk in just 4 innings of work, though he did strike out 7 hitters. The Cards jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, thanks in large part to a 2-run homer from Willson Contreras. That would prove to be all the offense St. Louis would need, as the Padres would only hit two solo home runs, one of which came from Jackson Merrill, the first of his career. The Cardinals were able to pound out 14 hits on the evening while starter Kyle Gibson pitched 7 strong innings in a game that the Cardinals controlled from start to finish. The Padres will send Yu Darvish to the mound on Tuesday.
