The Pares defeated the Marlins 2-1 on Thursday night thanks to a quality start from Nick Martinez, who allowed just 1 run in 7 innings. Manny Machado continued his offensive tear, hitting two solo home runs. This game was an old-school pitcher's duel, as Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo allowed just 2 runs in 6+ innings himself. Machado's home runs would turn out to be the only offense the Padres needed, as the bullpen was able to cover 2 scoreless innings, as the Padres improved to 17-9 on the season.
