The Padres lost to the Mets 8-5 on Sunday Night Baseball, missing out on a road sweep of the first place Mets. But the Padres still took the series, which was an encouraging sign. Joe Musgrove had a rare outing in which he didn't earn a quality start, allowing 4 runs over 5.1 innings. The Padres scored first in this affair on an RBI-double from Eric Hosmer in the 6th inning, breaking what had been a scoreless affair through 5 innings. But the Mets answered back in a big way, scoring 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a 3-run blast from Pete Alonso, and run-scoring hits from Luis Guillorme and Tomas Nido. The Mets added 3 more runs to the board in the 7th to blow the game wide open. The Padres made things interesting in the 9th inning bringing the tying-run to the on-deck circle and forcing the Mets to bring in their All-Star closer Edwin Diaz, who closed things out for the Mets. The Padres now head to Detroit for 3 games against the Tigers before returning home for an 8-game homestand.
