The Padres earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Athletics on Monday night in Sacramento, on a night when Michael King didn't have his best stuff. The righty 3 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out just 2 hitters in 5.2 innings of work. King was spotted an early 3-0 lead, as the Padres touched home plate three times in the first inning thanks to an RBI-double from Manny Machado and a 2-run homer from Jake Cronenworth.
Machado added another RBI-double in the 4th inning, before the Athletics began climbing back into the game. Tyler Soderstrom hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 3rd, and the Athletics scored two more runs in the 4th to pull within a run. Fernando Tatis blasted a solo homer that left the ball park to make it a 5-4 game, before Soderstrom hit his second solo home run to pull back within one. But the Padres bullpen shut down the Athletics for the rest of the night, with Robert Suarez nailing down his 5th save of the season.
