The Padres began their road trip with a 9-4 win over the Pirates. Gavin Sheets was terrific, going 3-5 with a solo home run in the 4th inning and an RBI-single in the 5th inning. The Padres hitters jumped all over the Pirates, turning 14 hits into 9 runs. Dylan Cease's early season struggles continued, as he lasted just 4 innings, and exited with the score tied 2-2.
The Padres strung together 4 hits in the 5th inning, adding 3 runs on the scoreboard, and from there, the Padres' bullpen would handle the rest. The Padres suffered a scare in the 3rd inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit on the wrist by a fastball from Mitch Keller, and was removed from the game. The team announced during the game that initial x-rays were negative. After the game, Mike Shildt said the team dodged a potential bullet in terms of a serious injury and that he had a severe contusion, but Tatis avoided a serious injury.
