As most Upstate students return to class next week, 106.3 WORD's Back to School 22 series is taking a look at recent active school shooter trainings in the Upstate.

Many Upstate law enforcement divisions have held active shooter training exercises in the past few months in preparation for the upcoming school year, including in Greenville.

Last week, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office held joint active shooter training alongside the Greenville County School District that included both law enforcement personnel and teachers.

Dr. Burke Royster says the decision to run joint training including teachers came following the analysis of the response to the Tanglewood Middle School shooting incident from earlier this year.

“The biggest lesson we took away from Tanglewood after all the debriefing; the biggest takeaway was how important training is. That was the biggest takeaway.”
