As we continue our dive into summer health and safety tips this week, today we look at safety advice surrounding grilling and food-packing for different summer-time excursions.

Grilling is a staple of summer activities, especially with Independence Day less than a month away.

Prisma Sports Medicine Pediatrician Dr. Jeff Holloway offers advice for staying safe around a grill.

"A lot of meats, fishes, those sorts of things, need to be cooked to a certain degree in order to kill the bacteria and harmful substances on them. So making sure that we cook them based on their recommendations," Holloway said. "All aspects of the grill will be hot, kids coming around trying to see what you're cooking, so trying to get them away. And where the grill is on your porch -- that's where I've heard of fires starting because they were under something or too close to things that caught on fire."

You can listen to Dr. Holloway’s full set of recommendations regarding the safe use of grills below:

He also suggested keeping drinks and meats in separate coolers so that the meats that need to remain cold aren’t in a container that is being regularly opened.
