One of the most criminals in Upstate history may well be granted parole later this year. State officials announced Wednesday, that Susan Smith of Union County will have a hearing in front of the parole board in coming months.
Smith made national news in 1994 following the death of her two young sons. She originally told police that an unidentified black man kidnapped the boys. She then later admitted that she let her vehicle roll into the waters of a nearby lake with her 3 year old and 14 month old boys inside the car.
Smith was sentenced to life but that sentenced had a provision that makes parole possible after 30 years. No exact date has been set for her parole hearing, however it is expected to happen between early November and late December.
