Details released following shootout between deputy & suspect
Greenville County Sheriff's Office

More details have been released following a shootout between an Upstate deputy and a suspect, in September. A Greenville County Sheriff's Office deputy was involved in a shootout with a suspect, near Page Drive and Whitehorse Road, September 4th.

The deputy said he was clearing an unrelated traffic accident, when he saw a suspect pointing a gun at him from a short distance away. The deputy then fired on the suspect identified as 42 year old, Walter Jason Smith. The suspect then ran on foot into a field as backup arrived.

The initial deputy tried taking cover behind his car but was hit with gunfire. Deputies returned that fire and hit Smith. Both the deputy and Smith were injured in the incident. SLED was called into investigate and they later charged Smith with attempted murder and multiple weapons violations.

Sheriff Hobart Lewis says, an internal investigation determined that deputies did not break sheriff's office protocol in the incident.
