The shooting was reported just after 12:30 by the school resource officer, and Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis said during a press briefing that as many as 200 deputies and other law enforcement personnel responded within minutes of a request for backup.

The suspect, a 12-year-old male student, fled the scene and was later arrested at a residence on Easley Bridge Road. They have since been charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime, Possession of a Firearm on School Property, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Person under the age of 18 and will be transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
