North Carolina lawmakers have passed legislation following the death of a Ukrainian refugee on public transit in Charlotte.

As we previously reported, 23 year old Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death while riding the Charlotte Light Rail, last month.

The suspect, Decarlos Brown has a long criminal history and was shown on surveillance footage stabbing the woman. Now, a criminal justice reform package titled "Iryna's Law" has been passed in both the North Carolina Statehouse and Senate.

The legislation will put more stringent limits on bail and ensure more defendants undergo mental health evaluations. The Republican sponsored legislation could also restart executions in the state.

North Carolina has the death penalty but there's been no executions carried out there in nearly 20 years. The bill has now went to the Governor's Office and is under review.
